The Huangfu sect has been crippled by infighting.
Spies and traitors from the other 2 Sects are actually responsible for this as are some of the powerful noble families and factions within the sect. Some want to control the sect, some want to destroy it. Many of the old ghosts who are the ancient elders who are the backing of each of the 9 Divisions, most of them are actually stronger than the sect master, but there are strict rules on who is qualified to be the sect master so the old fossils can't directly take over but they are manipulating a lot of shit behind the scenes. The donghua doesn't do a good job of explaining the politics behind all the infighting.

In fact they do, its just that you can't see every detail on the anime/donghua. Also, some of these xianxia stories have a mc who doens't need any instruction. In this case , you have an actual deity who knows every skill there is to know. What could you possibly teach him?
